Supplementing Your Child's Education

I had a girls' night out recently. I was out with about 12 women. The conversation, as it usually does, turned to our children and the discussion of public vs. private school came up. I taught first grade in a public school. I pay an enormous amount of money in taxes to support our public schools, so I plan to send my children to public school. I know the public school system is not perfect, and the schools in Newport are really not perfect. As a former teacher, however, what I do know is that half of schooling is what the parents do with it. Schooling doesn't end at 2:45 when the bell rings or on June 9th when it is let out for the summer. No, schooling is the responsibility of the parents as well. There are so many things you can do to help your child.

I found a fantastic website, full of information and programs. SCORE! Learning Centers offers programs for Pre-K all the way through to High School. They offer a program, Innovative Tutor, which specializes in programs like reading, writing, math and study skills. It's absolutely amazing what they have to offer. Why not use an Innovative Tutor for your children? The fact that the offer programs to children starting at age 4 is so appealing to me. I love the idea of giving Timmy a jump start.

They also have summer programs! If you have some extra time in the summer, why not supplement your child's education? It's the smart thing to do!
